Norwegian citizenship test: dates, registration and price
There is no national test calendar. Each municipality runs its own test centre and decides the dates and the price. You register in HK-dir's registration portal and pick the date there.
How to register, step by step
- Open the registration portal from the HK-dir page for your test: citizenship test or social studies test ("Meld deg på").
- Choose the county (fylke) where you live. The portal lists every test centre (prøvested) in that county.
- Centres that have set a date are listed first and can be opened. There you see which tests you can book and what they cost. A centre you cannot click has not opened registration for its next test.
- Pick how to pay: bank card in the portal, online banking, invoice, or by agreement with the centre.
- Finish the registration. According to HK-dir the registration is not valid until you have chosen how to pay and completed it. For the social studies test HK-dir adds that you are not registered until you have a confirmation by text message and e-mail.
When is the next test?
The municipality decides when the test is held. The dates are shown in the portal after you choose your county. If your centre has no new date, contact the centre and ask when the next test is. Contact details are in the portal. About two weeks before the test the centre sends an invitation with the date, time and place.
What does it cost?
Your municipality sets the price. HK-dir gives a range of about 300 to 1,800 NOK for the citizenship test and about 500 to 1,300 NOK for the social studies test. The exact price is shown in the portal. If you have the right and duty to Norwegian social studies training, you can take the social studies test free of charge once: contact your test centre, they register you.
The registration is binding
You pay even if you do not take the test. If you have a sick note, you can take the test another time. To cancel, contact your test centre.
What to bring on the test day
Valid physical ID. You sign a candidate list when you arrive, and the ID number must match the one you registered with. HK-dir accepts, among others, a valid passport, a Norwegian bank card with photo, a Norwegian driving licence (original or duplicate; a digital licence is not valid), an EEA national ID card, a refugee travel document or alien's passport, and a residence card for foreigners. No aids are allowed: mobile phones, smart watches, dictionaries and notes count as cheating. Cheating can mean no certificate, a one-year wait and paying again.
Accommodation
The test can be adjusted, for example with extra time or a separate room. Contact your test centre as soon as possible and no later than three days after you registered (HK-dir: request accommodation).
After the test
You see the result the day after the test. The certificate (prøvebevis) arrives 2 to 4 weeks after the test, if you passed. Your registration and result are in Min side. You cannot appeal the result, but you can complain about formal errors.
